farewell 2012

I decided I would do something with the kids today that Chris would’ve wanted to do if he was here.  So after a productive morning of school work, lunch and rest time, we headed to the GSMNP!

Our goal was to see snow (even from a distance) and wildlife.  Well, that was mine, Foster, Katie and Theodore’s goal.  Parker’s goal was to shoot and kill a snow monster and a sea monster.

We did see snow! Way up yonder! And we counted 66 deer. The best being the big buck that Foster took pictures of. He said it was an 8 pointer. I let him get out of the van and walk in close, he was so excited.

Foster chattered the whole time about his daddy. All the kids did, mentioning all the trips before when we had seen another big buck or the bear we had seen or all the turkey. It was a wonderful way to have them have a little daddy time today, without really being with daddy.

We picked up pizza on the way home and I had asked everyone to say “farewell 2012” before getting in bed. Mostly they just ignored me or didn’t cooperate. I know the day is soon coming when I hear “Mom you’re such a dork!” on a daily basis. For now though, I just threaten them to get them to let me take their picture. Especially that big one, he really doesn’t like his picture taken anymore.

Here’s hoping you all have a wonderful 2013!!!

happy stuff

Apparently, toddlerhood in the Grubb home requires you to be prepared…
with 4 paci’s and a play knife.

My 8 year old son rising to his Daddy’s challenge to learn to play chess while he’s gone.

Fresh air and freedom.

“I want to go!”

Pretending with play-doh.

oh boy

I had the privilege of spending extra alone time with Katie this past weekend.  She was a flower girl in a wedding and so I spent quite a few hours painting her nails, getting her dressed up and taking her to the rehearsal, wedding and reception.  Katie is not a very prissy little girl.  She enjoys digging in the mud, climbing trees and playing chase with the best of them.  But, she IS a girl.

In contrast, the boys are BOYS.

Here are a few examples of this over just the past couple of days;

  • Parker shoved a popcorn kernel up his nose. Leading me to have the “we don’t stuff things up our nose” talk with him. (Thankfully since he was sick and blowing his nose the last 5 weeks, he was able to blow hard and get it out.)
  • Jonah climbed on top of the dining room table, tried to swallow a rubber bouncy ball, pooped in the bathtub, threw his food off his highchair tray, hit all his siblings with something hard. On the head.
  • Foster hid and scared Grammy and caused her to jerk and hurt her shoulder (which is still sore from getting hit by a car).  He also flew his remote control helicopter into my head.
  • Theodore tried to play sword fight in the living room knocking over a lamp and almost knocking over the Christmas tree. He peed ALL over my toilet because he waited too long to get to the bathroom.  He also argued with me that he should be able to use chocolate milk as the milk in his cereal this morning.

30 days of thanks: day 27

This sickness has gotten to my throat, my voice is hardly there and it hurts when I try to talk.  I cough and hack and basically try not to swallow.  One thing that I have noticed is I need to try talking less when I am well.

This is the conversation between Katie (7) and Theodore (5) while they ate and I sat at the other end of the table and sipped ginger ale.

Katie: “Daddy’s giving Jonah a bath.”

Theodore: “Weah, I know.”

Katie: “Let’s just say that it would be really hard for a mom to be sick and her husband to be gone on a long trip and she has to take care of FIVE kids all by herself. That would be really hard.”

Theodore: “Like Mommy is sick and Daddy’s going on a big trip and her’s gonna have to take care of all FIVE tids by herself. {pause} {big smile} But her will be OK because her has GOD in her heart.”

Ummm…yeah I know. Sniff, sniff.

THAT is what I’m thankful for.
