30 days of thanks: day 12

I’m thankful for women.  I’m thankful that I am a woman and that I have the opportunity to raise a woman.

I took Katie to the grocery store today.  We are hardly ever alone together so today was a routine task, turned into a special time because it was just the two of us.  As we talked and joked and shopped together I realized how completely different it is with her than it is with any of the boys (Chris included).

Today I’ve thought of the women in my life and what they have meant to me.  My mom has always been there for me.  It took life experience for me to realize that not every mom is there for her daughter.  My mom encourages and supports me completely.  My aunts and grandmother and then Chris’s aunts and grandmothers are also women who play an important role in my life.

Today I was thanking God for the women friends he has allowed me to have.  And for the ones he has taken away. There is pain when friendships end but with time and reflection I can see how it really was for the best.

30 days of thanks: day 11

I’m thankful for:

FALL,

the crunch of the leaves,

the warmth of the sun,

the cool of the breeze,

the excitement of costumes and candy,

the smell of a campfire,

the sounds of children running and laughing,

progress on projects,

family time together.

30 days of thanks: day 10

Today I’m thankful that my mom is ok. God protected her when she was struck by a careless driver this morning.

The details are here.

I VOTED TODAY!

Today I’m thankful that I have the right to vote.  It’s hard to believe that it’s been less than 100 years since women were granted the right to vote.  As women, I think we have just as much responsibility to vote as the men around us.  I do think it’s interesting that men will still try and persuade their wives, daughters, mothers, etc. to vote a certain way.  I have had my husband and my father tell me who I need to vote for in the past few days.  And they aren’t in agreement.

I’m thankful that I get to make up my own mind.  I’m thankful that I have so much freedom, as a woman, but more importantly as a citizen.

Have you voted yet?

I’m thankful for breast-feeding and all that it has meant to me over the past 8 years, 8 months and 15 days.  I’ve been breast-feeding for more days than not since Valentine’s Day 2004.

I’m so grateful that I have had this time with each of my babies. Jonah turned 13 months yesterday and he’s still nursing.  He’s my last baby so I will NOT be in any hurry to wean him. All of my babies have self-weaned by 14 months so we shall see what he decides. I’ll have to admit that I am a little touchy when someone asks “are you still nursing him?” I want to start quoting statistics like this one.

The World Health Organization recommends 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding and continued breastfeeding with the addition of appropriate complementary foods until at least 2 years of age.

Then I realize, it’s not about anyone else.  It’s about a mother and her child.  This is a God-designed part of our relationship, as was conception, gestation and birth. When I realize that, it’s much easier to listen to someone else’s opinion. After all, it’s just an opinion and we all have them.

30 days of thanks: day 6

Today I’m thankful for our new-to-us home.

I’m thankful for:

TWO full bathrooms
windows that OPEN
closets with LIGHTS
an ATTACHED GARAGE
(with an electric door opener)
a covered FRONT porch
a covered BACK porch
a FENCED IN backyard
a PAVED driveway
a quiet, cul-de-sac STREET
CARPET
(helps with the noise and is cozy on bare feet)
a HUGE kitchen bar
a new fridge with an ICE MAKER
a new-to-us GIANT deep freezer
shady TREES in the backyard
(and brightly colored leaves to play in)
a GARBAGE disposal
a massive PANTRY

We are living like royalty in this 30 something year old, brick rancher.  With brown/gold carpet and metal windows.  With minor repairs that need to be done to the sheet rock.  We are living it up.  We ARE in the minuscule percentage of the world’s population. Today I’m thankful that we are cuddled up in our mansion, warm, dry, fed, healthy and together.

30 days of thanks: day 5

Today I’m thankful for laughter.  When I was growing up, there was a lot of laughter in my home.  Teasing and joking and making light of bad moods is a learned behavior.  I’m so thankful that I was taught that and I hope I am passing the skill on to my kids as well.  Life doesn’t have to be so serious!

30 days of thanks: day 4

Today I’m thankful for having a three year old in my house.  We haven’t ever sent a preschooler of ours to daycare, so I get to cherish every day of learning and growing.

I’m thankful I get to hear him say, “I like you Mommy. And I love you too Mommy.”

30 days of thanks: day 3

Today I’m thankful that my children have siblings.

Siblings are the people we practice on, the people who teach us about fairness and cooperation and kindness and caring – quite often the hard way.
